Reddit Hug of Death!

The latest paper by H. Esfahlani et al (J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 139, 3259 (2016)), covered by an article on EPFL website (August 9, 2016), has been tremendously commented on Reddit. After a couple of hours, the EPFL website has been killed by the huge amount of visitors (28’876 visitors on August 11, when monthly average lies below 1’000 per day during July/August !).

Acoustic carpet cloak based on an ultrathin metasurface

An ultrathin acoustic metasurface based on membrane-capped cavities is proposed to acoustic cloaking applications in the audible range (around 1 kHz). The proposed design surpasses the existing concepts in terms of thinness. 3D prototyping technologies can be employed to further develop such a “carpet cloak” concept.

Locating sound sources in space with a single microphone made possible with acoustic leaky-wave antenna

A new design of acoustic leaky-wave antenna makes possible the localization of a sound source with one single microphone, without resorting on microphone array signal processing. Thanks to the realization of a dispersive medium in the leaky-wave antenna, the direction of arrival can be simply derived from the acoustic power spectrum measured with a microphone located at one extremity of the antenna.

This new concept has been published in the Special Issue on Acoustic Metamaterials of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (article in OPEN ACCESS).

First realization of the prisming effect in acoustics
